STROKES ARE BASED ON 'FEEL' NOT MECHANICS!
Remember the basic principles for learning tennis with my system is to develop a 'feel' for different strokes along with developing mental skills through REPETITION. Repetition of simple procedures create that 'feel' NOT an over emphasis on the technical skills and mechanics. Click here for an article that I wrote on 'feel' vs 'mechanics' in April 2001

Welcome to Tom's Online Tennis Lesson, sponsored by TennisWarrior.com, "Where you can learn to think like a pro!"
Just for fun and to learn more I often do an Internet search for phrases like "repetition in sports" or "learning by repetition." Occasionally I find some thought-provoking articles. I'm amazed at how little is written about the repetition process in sports. I have also discovered that there is more research about repetition and stroke feel in golf than there is in tennis.
I know that many of you would still like a lot of technical information to help correct your strokes. Of course, I'm the wrong pro for that! On the forehand groundstroke all I teach is to rotate the shoulder back and rotate the shoulder forward while you swing the racket low to high. On the backhand all I teach is to coil up from the shoulder and uncoil the shoulder as you swing the racket low to high. Then, my students hit hundreds of balls weekly as I guide them through the molding process using many different repetition formats.
All you have to do is watch the top pros to realize they learned more by hitting balls than by massive technical and mechanical information. They all have different strokes with their own individual style and form. When learning to play tennis the formula should be hitting balls first and the technical skills second! In clubs everywhere this formula is reversed - overdone mechanics first and hitting many balls second. Most players are attempting to fit themselves into an exact mechanical mold.
In the May 2005 issue of Sports Illustrated Rafael Nadal was asked who he modeled his game after. He replied, "I never thought like that. I just played the way I was comfortable playing." Playing with his own individual comfortable style he recently won the French Open. It works!
After giving you this brief introduction I was planning to quote from an article I found from the world of golf. Because the entire article is so insightful and meaningful, I would rather send you directly to it. Written by nationally-syndicated golf writer Dr. Barry Lotz, this article is more proof that those of you pursuing repetition as a means of advancing your game are right on track. Keep it up. Do not let anything distract you. Stay on course!
Hit balls on a ball machine and forget your mistakes
Hit balls on a wall and forget your mistakes
Hit balls with a practice partner and forget your mistakes
Hit balls in a match and forget your mistakes
Hit! Hit! Hit! And forget your mistakes.
When reading, replace the word "golf" with "tennis." Also.... I promise I did NOT write this article! :)

TESTIMONIAL
Hi Tom,
"I purchased your book "The Truth About Winning" and the 2 CD set "Think Like A Pro" from Amazon about 2 weeks ago. I immediately put into use your exceptional mental strategies and was able to overcome a huge mental deficit that I have struggled with since I started playing tennis.
My fear of losing is finally for the first time in my life starting to disappear from my thoughts when I am out there on the court. Thank you so much for sharing your strategies for success through positive thinking in such an enjoyable easy reading, light hearted manner. Your love of the game and your desire to truly help others comes across so clearly.
Thank you so much for this web site and the email coaching."
Sincerely,
Beth Dammeyer

ADDENDUM: I teach a total system of thinking in regard to stroke production and mental attitude which I cannot explain in one email. Although each lesson can stand alone you will derive tremendous physical and mental benefit by understanding the total philosophy. These emails, my web site, books, and tapes are part of a course in tennis, not just isolated tennis tips. They all fit together into a system. A system that once understood can help you not only learn tennis at a faster rate, and develop mental toughness, but also give you the knowledge necessary to help guide you and your children to a better understanding of the developmental process.
